My Quote for the Day

"...writing from a place of fear and concern guarantees only one result: mediocrity.”

Alex Gansa, the creator (with Howard Gordon) of “Homeland”

from the New York Times article on the show's season finale

  1. Sounds like an ominous warning... does it mean to be intimidating? How do you take it?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to write but isn't seasoned? I think the quote is great advice but in a scary way.

  2. For me, that quote just means we need courage to write what's in our hearts. I wrote from that "scared" place for a long time. Once I realized that I couldn't listen to all those inner critics, I kicked my writing up a notch.

When I heard Cynthia Lord speak at an SCBWI event a couple of years ago about the challenges of writing the truth when it's very close to you, I was inspired.

Thanks for the question. Now you are inspiring me to think about the topic!
