If
you take a book with you on a journey… an odd thing happens: The book
begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open
that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into
your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place,
what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it…
yes, books are like flypaper–memories cling to the printed page better
than anything else.

Today, for many reasons, I'm remembering reading Les Misérables, for Mrs. Glassco's senior English class. My friend Ivy and I poured over the heavy book together after school in the basketball gym.
I so hope I'm going to love the movie.
What book, for you, most recalls where it was read?
1. The Hound of the Baskervilles. In bed as a young teen. Had to sleep with the lights on!
ReplyDelete2. To Sir With Love rec'd to me by our beloved school librarian~~read it in the overstuff leather chair to the right of her desk.
3. Jaws. On Martha's Vineyard the summer the movie came out~~having been filmed there. (see #1 re: lights on)
My books aren't as profound as Leslie's! I remember reading Cherry AMes, Nurse in my bedroom and my father reading us Winnie the Pooh on the living room couch. And about 30 years ago, I read Cynthia Voigt's books (Dicey's Song, Homecoming) in my home after I was widowed and deciding that I wanted to write a book like hers.
