It's Been Too Long

11/3/2020

UPDATE TO QUAKER MOTTO CALENDAR INFORMATION!

We have a calendar for 2021.

Check out my latest blog on the topic for ordering info!

https://ascattergood.blogspot.com/2020/11/quaker-motto-calendar.html

It's been way too long since I blogged. Almost the entire pandemic, it seems.

There's nothing left to say about Quarantine/ masks/ social distancing/ homeschool so I won't even try.

But I did want to say that, sadly, there are no more QUAKER MOTTO CALENDARS.

The Scattergood family has produced these lovely gems for generations. But for various unanticipated reasons, 2020 is their last year.

I'll try to share a few quotes here, as that was my favorite part of these perfectly-sized calendars.

Here's one the family loves. Perfect for late summer and early fall.

Enjoy your trees, wherever you are!

"Time is never wasted listening to the trees;

If to Heaven as grandly we arose as these.

Holding to each other half the kindly Grace,

Haply we were worthier of our human place."

Thanks for the lovely quote. yes, 2020 has been a very strange year. Many of us haven't been able to write during the quarantine. You are not alone. Nice to see you back at it.

Broken hearted! I just discovered the Motto Calendar clearing out a f/Friend’s apartment as she moved to assisted living. So I was ready to start my own collection. Is this a project that could be passed on to someone else?

I'm heartbroken. Our family and friends have enjoyed these calendars for generations.

David Ritchie gave me my first motto calendar many years ago. Friends and family expect one from me every year. No more. I wondered why may order form came back and was puzzled by the two different addresses. Thanks to you and your family for keeping the calendar going for so long. One more piece of the old culture that slips away -- FW

Thanks for your comments. I actually have started a file of all the emails asking "what happened" and if anybody ever revives them, I'll definitely answer them and announce it here.

I too am heartbroken. I had revived this family tradition that was started by my great uncle and continued every year until his death. My three remaining relatives in their 90's were surprised and thrilled. Then my sisters became excited to receive them and my Quaker friend etc. Please know that they meant a lot to us and were as anticipated as a much loved family tradition, now sadly gone. RIP Motto Calendar. You and all that you stood for are greatly missed. Pat S., Norway, Maine

Just as your family continued the tradition of publishing the Motto Calendar, my family had a tradition of giving the calendars to friends and family each Christmas. I had to search holy google to find what had happened after my check was returned (twice) from the PO Box. Wishing you all the best but honestly, I am so very sad.

I’m devastated! My check & order form were also returned saying it could not be delivered to the address. So then I emailed & then I Googled. It was a difficult way to learn of the demise of an old friend...
Cannot express my sorrow. 🙏🏽

Thank you, all Scattergoods everywhere and everywhen, for giving the gift of thoughtful and inspiring Motto calendars for so many years. One of the ushers at my church used to send them in his Christmas cards, which prompted me to order for my holiday list. I've enjoyed reading and sharing the calendars for over 20 years. Even today, with a calendar on every phone, my friends have been delighted to receive these collections of uplifting and calming quotes. Your generosity and diligence is most appreciated.

I am wishing you, your family, and friends health and happiness, and knowing that you are already blessed.

Sincerely,
Eliz Crowley

I, too, am heartbroken to have heard from my 92-year-old father that “the end has come” which he quickly clarified was referring to the Motto Calendar.
He mailed them out to all family members and many close friends. I received one every year for last 46 years, ever since I left my childhood home at the age of 20–first from my grandfather, then the baton passed to my father. It was a fall ritual to tie red ribbons and address the envelopes. And it was a gift that sustained one throughout the following year. They were treasured. Our heartfelt thanks to all the Scattergoods for your thoughtful compilations that resulted in such splendid little gems. The calendars
were such beacons of brightness to so many over the passing generations.
Gratefully, and with sadness,
Alicia Blatchford

Thank you to the Scattergood family for the many many years of wonderful Motto Calendars. My mother gave them to family and friends and I have enjoyed carrying on her tradition. Having had my order returned twice as well, I wrote to David B. at Pendle Hill to see if he knew what might have happened. He kindly sent me this link, and I am so glad to know that there is hope for a 2021 Motto Calendar. You are all in my prayers, and I hope you will let us know if there is anything we can do to help (send extra funds, perhaps?). Stay safe and well, Masako White (CA)

Ms Augusta - I am as saddened by this news as everyone else. I love these calendars--each month brings inspiring and positive quotes. Well, I guess every good thing comes to an end. Please let me know if anyone revives this wonderful tradition. Terri (Whitefish, Montana)

Ms Augusta - I too am saddened by the sad news the Motto Calendar is no more. Each month brought such positive and inspiring quotes. I will be lost without this calendar! Thank you for the many years of this positive tradition. Please advise if there is any chance of a new printing. I too would be happy to send additional funds. Thank you most humbly! Terri (Whitefish, Montana)

Ms Augusta - I'm afraid to hope! Maybe a 2021 Motto Calendar! I was so saddened to hear it might not be printed again. Such a loss. The positive and inspiring comments every month help make everything brighter. If there is anything I can do to help keep this sweet tradition going, I am willing to pitch in. Thank you for the years of goodness! Terri (Whitefish, Montana)

Very grateful this tradition may continue. Please add me to the email list to order the 2021 Motto Calendar. Also consider letting the many Calendar fans know how to support you and the family--crowdsourcing sayings, crowdsourcing, etc.--in publishing it.

My Quaker grandmother used to order these calendars and give them to friends and family every year. We always had one in our dining room. After she died in 1974, my mother continued the tradition until she died in 1999. Since then I have continued sending them, to family and friends and some friends of my mom who were then living still. I am 68 and wondered who would continue when I'm gone. Sounds like no one will need to. I sure have enjoyed those little calendars over the years.
