QUAKER MOTTO CALENDAR 2022

 It's time!

The new Motto Calendars are in production. I'm proud of our family for carrying on this tradition for so many years. Hats off to our daughter who continues to work on keeping the Quaker Motto Calendar going for another year when we all thought the long-standing tradition had ended.

If you missed getting yours last year and don't have an order form, here it is.

Want to know more about the history of the calendars?

If you aren't familiar with these little gems, here's a sample page, with quotes ranging from Buddha to Disney. (AND they're small enough to tuck into a holiday card.)

QUAKER MOTTO CALENDAR

 Good news!

There will be a 2021 Quaker Motto Calendar.

For this year, we're asking if you'll send your email address to

scattergoodmotto@gmail.com

to receive an order form and an address to send your checks.

You can also leave a comment with your email address on this blogpost and I'll send the mailing address for payment and orders.

Because of the scramble to get the calendars ready ASAP, the checks will go to Katharine Scattergood Marino this year. As soon as she receives your payment and order, the printer will get them to you.

Here is some information you may want to know:

Hearing how much everyone loves these little gems really made us try very hard to keep them going.

For those of you not familiar with the calendars, here's a page from yesteryear!

It's Been Too Long

11/3/2020

UPDATE TO QUAKER MOTTO CALENDAR INFORMATION!

We have a calendar for 2021.

Check out my latest blog on the topic for ordering info!

https://ascattergood.blogspot.com/2020/11/quaker-motto-calendar.html

It's been way too long since I blogged. Almost the entire pandemic, it seems.

There's nothing left to say about Quarantine/ masks/ social distancing/ homeschool so I won't even try.

But I did want to say that, sadly, there are no more QUAKER MOTTO CALENDARS.

The Scattergood family has produced these lovely gems for generations. But for various unanticipated reasons, 2020 is their last year.

I'll try to share a few quotes here, as that was my favorite part of these perfectly-sized calendars.

Here's one the family loves. Perfect for late summer and early fall.

Enjoy your trees, wherever you are!

"Time is never wasted listening to the trees;

If to Heaven as grandly we arose as these.

Holding to each other half the kindly Grace,

Haply we were worthier of our human place."

Quaker Motto Calendar

It's that time of year.  2015 Calendar Ordering Time!

Actually, I kind of missed the suggested order date. But it's not too late and I'm placing my order today for the QUAKER MOTTO CALENDAR.

Here's the 2015 order form.
AND most importantly, the contact info should you need to reach out.

I don't actually sell/ write/ produce these. My sister-in-law Marion Ballard is the one to call/ email. Her contact info is right there.

The Dali Lama's Quote for the Day

January has buzzed by so quickly I haven't really looked at my Quaker Motto Calendar.
One of this month's quotes seems just what I need for today:

People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness.
Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.
(Dali Lama XIV, 1935- )

Reading this today, when I was given a jar of homemade fig preserves, reminds me of my funniest story ever. About figs and sort of about the Dali Lama. Sort of.

Quaker Motto Calendar

Some of you may know of the Scattergood connection to this wonderful little wall calendar.

They are small. They hang perfectly over a writer's desk, a kitchen drawer, a bedroom chest. Or they tuck nicely into notebooks, totes, briefcases.

The quotes are pretty ecumenical. You know those Quakers.
Everybody from Sirach (I'm sorry. I had to google that. I was raised in the Episcopal church and we didn't know much about Bibles...If all my friends hadn't been Baptists and Methodists and I hadn't regularly attended BTU and MYF and VBS, who knows if I'd ever learned a thing.):

"May the Lord grant you wisdom of mind to judge his people with justice."

to
Maya Angelou: "Let nothing dim the light that shines from within."

I've blogged about these before. Several times.

For example
Here:  http://ascattergood.blogspot.com/2010/09/quaker-motto-calendar.html

And guess what? I over-ordered this year. I have a few motto calendars to spare.
If you'd like one, leave me a comment. I'll see what I can do!

(Depending on how many comment, I may have to draw names. Or see if my amazing sister-in-law, Marion Scattergood Ballard, has any extras to share.)

Let's let this run from right now until December 31st. Comment here or on FACEBOOK, and I'll add your name to the hat.

Thanks, and have a happy, healthy, productive, fun 2014!

No Resolutions

I'm not good at New Year's Resolutions. But I do like goals, or at least thinking about goals. Especially the first week in January.

Because I have such eloquent writer friends (one of whom I actually know as an in-person, flesh and blood friend), I'm going to let them say what I've been thinking. I could not have written it better myself.

From fellow 2012 Debut Writer, Caroline Starr Rose (whom I truly hope to meet this year), good thoughts on Jumpstarting Your Writing in the New Year, with a reading list of craft books. Here's the link:
http://carolinebyline.blogspot.com/2013/01/jumpstart-your-writing-in-new-year-part.html

While you're there, check out her previous entry, about Goodreads and the public life of writers/ readers.

Irene Latham's first book, Leaving Gee's Bend is still one of my favorite historical fiction novels. (Her new book is on my list to read!) She, like Caroline, is a poet, so it doesn't surprise me that she chooses one word to guide her new year.

Read her blogpost about ONE LITTLE WORD  here:
http://irenelatham.blogspot.com/2013/01/one-little-word-for-2013.html

Now, what could MY word be? Thinking! Hmm. Thinking? That's not my it, but it well could be.
I'm leaning toward PONDER because I've always liked that word...

And my Tampa writer buddy, Rob Sanders goes with Three Words: http://robsanderswrites.blogspot.com/2013/01/three-words.html

Are we all thinking of new beginnings? Tossing out old calendars, expired coupons and cans, shoes that don't fit? Cleaning out the Junk Drawer and the window sills, donating to our libraries and our friends the books we know we'll sadly never read.

For me, 2012 will be hard to beat.
But here's to 2013!

Each year I toss out my previous year's Quaker Motto Calendar and hang the new one over my desk. But before I do that, I reread the quotations and often use the backs of the pages for notes. Here's an old one that seems particularly appropriate for the New Year, for writing, or just for moving ahead in a busy world.

If you're still with me here, this could be your lucky day. I found an extra 2013 Quaker Motto Calendar hiding in my stash. Leave me a comment and I'll draw a name tomorrow evening (January 3, because everybody needs an inspiring little calendar ASAP) and send it right off.

Quaker Motto Calendar

Yes, it's probably too late to order for this Christmas. But it may not be too late to get them before January gets away from us.

I've blogged about the Quaker Motto Calendar a few times. You can read about it
HERE .

This is the new order form, 2013 version.
(Sorry, I can't help expedite an order. I really have nothing to do with these little gems, other than spreading the word. Because I do love them and like to share what I love.)

Quote of the Day: Veterans Day, 2010

From my November Quaker Motto Calendar, this one, from Native American culture, somehow seems appropriate for today--

"The soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears."

Quaker Motto Calendar

It's not too late to order.

(I peeked ahead as I tore off October. On the December calendar:)

"Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards."

Quaker Motto Calendar

It's time to order!

Check out the order form for these Quaker Motto Calendars and note that orders received by October 1 are guaranteed delivery by December 1st. Just in time for your holiday greetings. The calendars fit perfectly into large Christmas card envelopes, or you can tuck your own smaller cards into the calendar's envelope.

Here is a sample page from the 2011 calendar.

I love the stories that come from memories of seeing these sold at a childhood church or hanging near a much-loved grandfather's office desk. You can read about the Scattergood family's connection to the calendars in last year's blog post by clicking here. Great Aunt Margery Scattergood added her story in a letter, meticulously typed, stamped with a 13-cent "Airmail" stamp, and mailed to me in February, 1976, when I was new to the family. She explained that they were started by her father, Thomas.

Father was not gifted in the ministry, so he did not speak in Meeting but felt that getting out these calendars and distributing them would be one way he could substitute a worthwhile service instead of speaking in Meeting. He carried on the work until his death in 1907 when my brother, Henry Scattergood carried them forward and continued them until his death in 1963.

Since that time, other Scattergood relatives have kept the calendars in print. They are now put together by my sisters-in-law Marion Scattergood Ballard and Evelyn Scattergood Day. Good for them to keep this tradition alive and do their own Good Works.

Thought for the Day

Tossing out last year's Quaker Motto Calendar and realizing there are some thoughts that need remembering, especially this busy, holiday time of year-

Many people will walk in and out of your life.
But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
Eleanor Roosevelt

Quaker Motto Calendar

Please note: there are newer entries, with updated information for ordering! Click here for 2013 info.
http://ascattergood.blogspot.com/2012/11/quaker-motto-calendar.html

This morning, a few days late, I turned to October in my favorite calendar, and the quote seemed apt. I'd just spent several sunny afternoons last week watching the monarchs migrate through North Carolina.

Here's a Nathaniel Hawthorne quotation from October's calendar:

Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you sit down quietly may light upon you.

In 1884 Thomas Scattergood initiated these little gems known to many as "Quaker Motto Calendars." My sisters-in-law have continued the family tradition of compiling them. Although the old address still works for a while, this year there's a new address for ordering the 2010 calendars.

THE MOTTO CALENDARPO Box 1383 Pottstown, PA 19464

They are the perfect size to fit into a large Christmas or greeting card. They are exceptionally realistically priced:
25 envelopes and calendars for $28.00
(without envelopes, $25.00)

If you order 50, the price goes down to $46 and $40! You can order as few as 10 ($15) but why would you?
And if you order soon, you are assured delivery by early December.

And, for my writing colleagues, they are perfect little calendars to tuck away near a desk or on a bulletin board where the sayings will inspire you every day. Like this one from September:

Don't cry because it is over. Smile because it happened.
Dr. Seuss

And here's a sneak preview - February 2010:
